JOB TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE

 

DEPARTMENT: School-Based

 

GRADE: __68 (without National Certification)

            __State Salary Scale at Master’s Level (with National Certification)

 

FLSA: Exempt

 

REPORTS TO: Principal (Also takes direction from Director of Student Services)

 

SUPERVISES: None

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months

 

QUALIFICATIONS: __Completion of training necessary for licensing as a registered nurse

__Experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred

__Must be certified by the American Nurses’ Association (ANA) or the
National Association of School Nurses (NASN)

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Develops policies, procedures, and work standards for school health program.
  2. Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
  3. Initiates program changes as needed.
  4. Manages program allotment efficiently.
  5. Prepares health reports for supervisor, board of education, and health department.
  6. Collaborates with other child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program.
  7. Negotiates professional and medical services essential to the school health program.
  8. Provides first-aid care and medically-prescribed services.
  9. Maintains security of school health supplies.
  10. Serves as a resource person on health issues.
  11. Provides staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers.
  12. Screens and conducts health appraisals for students and staff.
  13. Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required.
  14. Recommends corrective action where problems are identified.
  15. Conducts home visits when appropriate.
  16. Corresponds with parents on health needs of children.
  17. Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.

 

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the School Nurse job classification within Bertie County Schools.

 

Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
